Don Pepe Estate Coffee, founded in 1898, is the oldest coffee farm in the region and the first in Panama to specialize exclusively in coffee production.
Located in Volcancito, Boquete (Chiriquí Province), it occupies about 70 hectares, comprising 59 ha of coffee cultivation and 11 ha of natural reserve.
Situated at high elevation—1,500 to 2,000 meters above sea level—on nutrient-rich volcanic soils, the farm benefits from a mild, wet microclimate ideal for high-quality coffee growth.
Ownership & Family Heritage
The farm is owned by the Vasquez-Flores family, now in its fifth generation of coffee growers.
One iconic figure is Antonio Vásquez, affectionately known as “Don Tony” (1952–2016). His lifelong dedication helped elevate Don Pepe’s reputation internationally.
Farming Philosophy & Environmental Stewardship
Emphasizes “pure lots”, where each variety is cultivated, harvested, and processed separately for traceability and ultimate quality.
Utilizes eco-friendly practices: only 10% of productive plots are set aside to preserve adjacent rainforest, and the farm uses advanced low-water processing equipment.
African raised drying beds are used for optimal drying control by variety and harvest date.
Varietals, Processing & Cup Profiles
Grow a wide range of varietals: Geisha, Caturra, Catuai, Bourbon, Typica, Java, plus a house blend.
Flavor notes often include raspberry, apricot, peach, walnuts, green apple, along with creamy body and aromatic citrus hints.
Coffee Tourism & Visitor Experience
The estate offers farm tours twice daily, covering coffee cultivation, processing, and ending with a sensory tasting experience.
Transportation to and from nearby accommodations can be arranged.
The estate also features a coffee shop set amid the farm’s natural beauty—open daily, where visitors can relax and savor freshly brewed coffee.
International Prestige & Recognition
Don Pepe’s reputation extends globally, with accolades such as Best of Panama awards and high acclaim across Asia, Europe, and the U.S.
Thanks to its rigorous quality control, the estate has gained access to discerning markets in countries like Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Australia, and New Zealand.
